The Z1 race team was started by crew chief Steven Hart, driver George Catanzano and Z1 racing supplies owner Mike Zibella.
The type of car chosen to race was the IMCA Modified car, a racecar with a national sanction that could be raced anywhere in the country.
George Catanzano in his rookie year would show that the Z1 team would be a future force in this series winning 4 times at the Brewerton Speedway and also winning the final race of the season at the Fonda Speedway. In 1997 the team raced 33 times. The season was a success with 5 wins and a 7th place finish in the Northeast Regional points and also a runner up finish in the rookie points.
The Z1 team in 1998 backed up its debut season with 4 wins at Brewerton Speedway and 1 win at the Can-Am Speedway and 29 top fives in 47 starts finishing third in the Regional points and winning the Utica Rome track championship.
In 1999 the team took a year to rebuild and purchase new equipment for the 2000 racing season but have races 12 times and recorded a win and 5 top fives at the Lebanon Valley Speedway.
The 2000 season we added a new car and new personnel to our race program. Now we were ready to build a team capable of going after a national championship in the 2001 and beyond seasons. Bill Ambrosia, a crew chief his self was to team with Steve Hart to prepare the Z1 cars to the highest standards. This seasons goal was to race 30 races and test our program for the future.
This year we made a statement, 31 starts, 14 wins, and 21 top fives. With wins at the Fonda Speedway, Albany Saratoga Speedway, Can-Am Speedway, Five Mile Point Speedway and Eastbay Raceway in Florida.
As the 2001 season approached our plans called for the team to run every Friday night at the Accord Speedway and Saturday Nights at the Fonda Speedway and the Florida winternationals. Mid week races at Brewerton, Can-Am, Pen Can, and Five Mile Point. A total of 40 to 50 races based on the weather.
The results would show that this team is capable of anything. 45 starts, 21 wins, 37 top fives with feature wins at the Fonda Speedway, Accord Speedway, Albany Saratoga Speedway, Can-Am Speedway, Skyline Speedway, Tioga Motorsports Park, and the Five Mile Point Speedway. The team also won the Accord Speedway track championship, the New York State Championship, The Northeast Regional Championship and 6th in the National points.
In 2002 the race team now became known as Team Z Motorsports. This year we tested the waters of asphalt pro late model racing. We had several top fives and 3 wins with our IMCA Modified.
In 2003 our team geared back to the basics, IMCA Modified Racing. Our plan was to win the Fonda Track Championship as well as the Neara Challenge Series and the Empire State Series. We were able to meet our goals except for the empire state series. In all we had a great 2003 winning 11 races with 20 top fives.
The 2004 plans found 2 new Hoffman Modifieds for George Catanzano and a 4 cylinder Seirroco for Tom Delaney and Angela Catanzano to share. At the seasons end George would claim the Utica Rome track championship as well as winning the IMCA Northeast Nationals along the way.
In 2005 George would have a stellar year claiming the Fonda Speedway Track Championship and holding his title as the IMCA Northeast Nationals winner and Utica Rome Speedway Track Championship. George would also bring home the 2005 IMCA Empire State Series Championship.
In 2006 George would follow the IMCA Empire State series and hit various other shows here and there throughout the season, cutting back his racing schedule. George would finish the season with 6 wins in 19 starts.
2007 would again find team running a select schedule claiming 4 wins in 11 starts capping off the season with a B Main victory and an A-main 11th place finish in the UMP Nationals at the famed Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.
